Is Hindi our National Language..?
Today while having breakfast at cafeteria we were discussing something about Movies, Sharukhan - Pakistan players, etc, etc. Someone said Hindi is national language, I said "There is no national language for India, Hindi and English are official languages". Oh! no one believed and started arguing and finally I asked them to find out somehow whether India has national language or not. Since I said the above sentence it does not mean I hate Hindi or I don't like Hindi or something else. Its just truth that India does not have National language.
One of my friend who had participated in this discussion checked in internet and found that there is no national language and she accepted it. But few people could not accept that Hindi is not a national language.
Come on! only few states mother tongue is Hindi not all the states. So those states do not belong to India? Those people are not part of India? Majority of states mother tongue is not Hindi. People from TN, Kerala, AP, Karnataka, All north east states, etc, etc do not know Hindi.
Even I did not know that Hindi is not our national language until we had similar kind of discussion around 1.5 yrs back in my room. Mohan said "Lal, belive me India doe's not have national language..!, if you want then please you check it out". "ok, let me check" I said. Then I checked in Google and I found the same that India doe's not have any national language. Even I had read samething in some book and then I believed it.
Some two weeks back there was a judgment from Gujarat high court saying that "Hindi is not a national language so you can't force anyone to write all the details in Hindi on their consumer products". Some one filed a case against some consumer product company saying that all the details on all their consumer products should be in Hindi so that every one can read and understand. But the above was the judgment from High court.
India itself was not a single country long time back and it was separate small countries ruled by many kings. So people speak many languages. Finally when we got the freedom from Briton we were a single country India by the time. Since Congress was the party who played major role to get the freedom Hindi became popular. Hindi was the mother tongue to the Gandhi, Nehru families.
After got the freedom, Congress announced that Hindi will be the national language. And even they tried to force Hindi to all the states and they won in the battle in most of the states except Tamilnadu. Politicians from Tamilnadu might have refused Hindi coz they might have scared to compete with central parties. Selfish? Everything was politics...!?. Whatever it may be forcing something against people is not democratic. So finally Congress withdrawn the rule and announced "Hindi is not a national language, Hindi and English are the official languages".
Because of these Politicians from Tamilnadu I could not speak in Hindi, watch Hindi movies. etc, etc :-)
Again, Whatever it may be forcing something against people is not democratic..!!!
-Indian who does not know Hindi
Hi Lal,
ReplyDeleteI have seen most of Andhra / Karnataka guys speaks hindi or atleast they understand the language. This is because they have Hindi as Third language in the school subjects itself.
Hindi is a common language which can be used at most of the developed cities, even though it is not national language. We need to learn hindi coz, it is already recognized by majority of the people.
Because of those Tamilnadu politicians, English became a official language of India.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise we might have been like china, where everyone does everything only in Hindi. And we wont be as good as Chinese, as Hindi is not our real mother tongue as well.
Now Chinese are great thinkers as they studied in their mother tongue. But they cannot communicate freely outside china, because of language barrier.
We are not great thinkers as we study in non-mother tongues like English and Hindi. But we can speak Engileesh as English ruled us for sometime.
Thanks to those Tamilnadu guys. You saved India. ;-)
Thanks to those Tamilnadu guys you learned to read/write in English study in English medium schools and speak English instead of Hindhi, so we could work for American companies and earn ;-)
ReplyDeleteIn a way, thse TN politicians are the main reason why there is outsourcing.
Also, it is only because people dont know hindhi in chennai, there are still jobs left for Tamilnadu people. Otherwise like mumbai, north indians would've came in and took away all the jobs from locals. (same is the case of kannadigas in bangalore no autodriver speaks kannada, by default all speak Hindhi , albeit there are a few more intricacies involved in it, like british-rule and tamil-impact etc.)
OH! In short India is a mess of many tiny nations, but we grow together, since we fought British together and now Hinduism, BCCI, ARR, English, Sanskrit, ISRO, Indian Railways, INR, Tajmahal, Vishy, Saina, Sania, Pakistan, China, saveourtiger.com, BPO, Kasab, *senas, India post, NHs... all act as gelling agents in keeping us together. cool.
ReplyDeleteLal, Even I use to think Hindi is our National Language until before We had a discussion in our room just a week back when my senior Rakesh Narayanan cleared Hindi is not our National Language. There r somethings which we learn in childhood and we dont forget and we dont try to find proofs for it. Like we learn alphabets, name of things, relations... etc. I had Hindi as a subject since my 3rd Standard. And I still remember, we had a lesson "Rastriya Bhasha Hindi" which means, National Language Hindi.
ReplyDeleteSo, I was in blind imagination that Hindi is our national language.
I was only thinking British rule is the reason for English in India. I have no idea whether Tamil Politicians r the reason behind English becoming official language. so, No comments.
I agree
